Coronavirus Update: Former President, Pranab Mukherjee Tests Positive for Covid-19

The former President had urged everyone over a tweet who had been in touch with him to isolate and test themselves for the virus

This afternoon, former President Pranab Mukherjee said that while he had visited hospital for a different purpose, he tested positive for the coronavirus. On that note he had urged everyone over a tweet who had been in touch with him to isolate and test themselves for the virus.

“On a visit to the hospital for a separate procedure, I have tested positive for COVID19 today. I request the people who came in contact with me in the last week, to please self isolate and get tested for COVID-19. #CitizenMukherjee,” the 84-year-old former president tweeted today.

Latest checks on COVID were produced by a variety of political leaders. Amongst other leaders are Union Ministers Amit Shah, Karnataka Chief Minister, Agriculture Minister BC Patilo and opposition Congress leader Siddaramaiah and Karti Chidambaram, Vishvas Sarang, Shivraj Singh Shouhan, Dharmendra Pradhan, B. Sriramulia.

On 25 July Chouhan screened for coronavirus positive and stayed hospitalized on 5 August for 11 days before discharge.

In the last 24 hours, India has reported 62,064 new cases of coronavirus, with a total of 15 lakh recoveries. According to the MOHFW, 1,007 new deaths in the country have been recorded. The total figure hits 44,386. The country’s count COVID-19 was 22,15,075, 6,34,945 of whom were personally engaged.

However, soon after the tweet by Pranab Mukherjee, wishes for a swift recovery flooded in social media.

“Please take care sir. We are praying for your speedy recovery and good health @CitiznMukherjee (sic),” Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wrote on Twitter.

“Sir, wishing you a speedy recovery and a long and healthy life,” Ajay Maken, ex-Delhi Congress chief tweeted.

“I pray for the well being and speedy recovery of Shri Pranab Mukherjee. I am confident he will be successful in recovering from the virus quickly. Wishing him strength and good health,” Union Minister Piyush Goyal tweeted.

“Wishing Former President Shri. Pranab Mukherjee a speedy recovery from COVID-19 and good health (sic),” Karnataka Congress leader DK Shivakumar wrote.

Pranab Mukherjee, a renowned reader, has published numerous books on the Indian economy and the nation building. He was given the second highest civilian award in India, Padma Vibhusan in 2008, the Best Legislative Reward in 1997, and the Best Indian Administrator Award in 2011.

A host of leading politicians in the country have been screened positive for coronavirus over the past few weeks, including Union Homeland Minister Amit Shah, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Sivraj Chouhan, and Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, Congress member Siddaramaiah.

Between the United States and Brazil, India became the third most impacted nation in the pandemic. Two lakh coronaviral cases passed this morning, four days after the 20 lakh mark was reached. Since the pandemic began, more than 44,000 people have died.

For the last six days India has appreciated a larger one day jump from fresh infections with Covid than the US and Brazil.
