Several states and territories including Delhi have announced new restrictions such as night curfews amid the spike in COVID-19 that has pushed new infection numbers to record highs.
India's record Covid-19 spike of more than 1 lakh daily coronavirus cases has even breached the peak of 99,181 seen in a single day during the first wave of the pandemic last September.
Covid-19 has killed more than 2.7 million people worldwide in the 15 months since it emerged, forcing governments around the world to introduce restrictions that have battered the global economy.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said 23,44,45,774 samples were tested for Covid-19 up to Sunday and of these, 880,655 samples were tested on the same day.
"PM Modi will be beginning the vaccination program. The details are being worked out," Mr Paul told NDTV on the launch of one of the world's largest vaccination program two days later.
As per the announcement made by CM Kejriwal, the weekend lockdown will remain in force till the daily number of Coronavirus cases stabilise in the city.
